20th Century Studios Releases Brief, But Thrilling Teaser for Predator Prequel “Prey”

Every since Arnold Schwarzenegger first fought to the death against the extra-terrestrial hunter in 1987, the Predator franchise has been a staple of sci-fi action/horror.  Consisting of six total films (including two crossovers with the xenomorphs from Alien), 20th Century Studios had previously announced that audiences would be gifted with a seventh installment in that series. And with the release of a brief, but thrilling teaser trailer, Prey seems to be something completely different than we’ve seen before.  And that’s probably a good thing!

Lasting only about 45 seconds, the teaser treats us to a beautiful sweeping aerial shot of a forest, followed by a Native American warrior armed with a bow and arrow as a familiar triangular shaped series of red dots appears on his forehead.  Of course fans of the series know exactly what that means.

Prey 3
Never something you wanna see on your forehead…

While it may be brief and shows us very little of the movie itself, the teaser for Prey accurately demonstrates that we’re in for something completely different. Up until now, we’ve seen action heroes contend with Yautja hunters (yes that’s their actual species name, Google it), but we’ve only ever seen them fight with modern weapons.

Prey offers us a chance for a more primitive technological fight, and maybe we’ll even find out that the Yautja themselves are not as technologically advanced at this point in history as well.  Either way, it promises to be something completely different for the franchise, which can’t be said for 2018’s The Predator, which just felt like a cheap imitation.

The teaser smartly avoids showing us the Predator itself. At this point, the anticipation is the most exciting part.

As horror fans, we want to see our favorite franchises flourish, but the best way to do that is to see new ideas and material explored.
