“Scream 6” Shows off NYC Setting in First Teaser Trailer

With less than 3 months to go, Paramount finally stopped teasing horror fans and dropped a teaser trailer for the upcoming Scream VI (or “SreaVI” according to the title card).  And while we only get a minute of new footage, there’s a lot to unpack and a lot to be excited for!

New Movie, New City
The teaser opens with establishing shots of New York City, making it very clear that unlike Jason Takes Manhattan, this is a movie that will entirely take place in the Big Apple (although it was mostly shot in Montreal).  We then see crowds of people dressed up in costumes, so we can assume this takes place on or around Halloween.

It could make for a really fun background setting, although if it is truly set around Halloween, the March release date is a bit odd.  Then again, having it in theaters for October 2022 would have been unheard of, being only 9 months after the release of the 5th film.  And Paramount may not have wanted to wait until October 2023 either.

Teaser 3
We get glimpses of Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, and Jasmin Savoy Brown. They’re not the only returning cast members, but they’re the only ones the teaser wants to show us right now…

We pick up with familiar characters: sisters Sam and Tara, along with Mindy as they’re riding the NYC subway amidst a sea of costumed people, including a few Ghostfaces.  One of them however seems to be an actual threat and thus kicks off another Scream movie!

We’ve seen instances where pranksters were wearing the Ghostface costume in previous movies, but the idea of so many people dressed that way for Halloween is genuinely fun and creepy.  Although one would think that in this universe, such costumes would be banned from stores and highly frowned upon due to so many real life murderers being associated with them.

Teaser 2
For those familiar with co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s previous film, Ready or Not, this was a really fun Easter Egg!

New Direction
The teaser may only be a minute long, but something definitely feels different about this installment.  Scream (2022) acted as both a legacy “requel” to the original, while also being a jumping off point for new characters and a new generation.  Most slasher franchises don’t keep their final girl nearly as long as Scream did with Sidney Prescott.

So while it may seem strange that this is the first movie in the series without Neve Campbell, this sequel is doing what every other slasher sequel was doing much earlier on in their lifespan.  Either way, it will be interesting to see these new characters and where this movie and franchise go from here!

Teaser 1
That definitely looks like it says ScreaVI doesn’t it? After all, the last movie was technically titled 5cream!
