Jenna Ortega Cast in “Beetlejuice” Sequel with September 2024 Release Date

After decades of rumors, planned pre-productions that went nowhere, and fans speculating/hoping it would come true, it has finally come true.  Beetlejuice is back, and he’ll be here in time for Halloween 2024!

While details are still emerging, we know the following based on what Warner Brothers has announced: “Beetlejuice 2” will release on September 6, 2024, Michael Keaton will be reprising his role as the titular character, Jenna Ortega has been cast as Lydia’s daughter, Justin Theroux has been cast in an unknown role, and longtime Burton collaborator Danny Elfman will return to score the film.

The original film remains a cult favorite that’s honestly difficult to categorize between horror and comedy.  That said, there is no denying its massive impact on the horror community.  To this day, you still see countless Beetlejuice related memorabilia sold in places like Hot Topic and horror conventions, as well as people in cosplay.

Thus far, we don’t know if Winona Ryder will be back, but likely that’s still being discussed/negotiated.  As for Jenna Ortega, she and Burton recently worked together on Netflix’s Wednesday.  And given her status as a goth/horror icon, it only makes sense that she would be cast in the film.

Between The Babysitter 2, X, Studio 666, Wednesday, and 2 Scream movies, Ortega has more horror cred than anyone right now!

We’re also not sure if other cast members will be back either.  However, the only one that might be likely is Catherine O’Hara as Cordelia.  Given Jeffrey Jones’ current status on the sex offender registry, it’s unlikely they would cast him due to bad press.

And while the Maitlands, portrayed by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis were a pivotal part of the original movie, it wouldn’t make sense to include them either because they’re both 35 years older and it wouldn’t make sense for ghosts to look older.

At this point, the project is very much still in pre-production, and given the current uncertainties surrounding the WGA strike, the script may get delayed, leading to production delays.  Warner Brothers is definitely covering their bases by announcing a release date a year and a half out.  But we’ll see if this production is affected like so many others are right now.

The original was famous for its iconic practical effects. Hopefully the sequel remembers this and doesn’t lean too heavily into CGI.
