A24’s “MaXXXine” Trailer Shows Off the Seedy Underbelly of 1980’s Hollywood

Following the smash double hit that was X and Pearl in 2022, horror fans have been eager for the next installment in this apparently trilogy.  First announced with the premiere of Pearl, MaXXXine finally has a release date of July 5, 2024, and today it now finally has a trailer!

Set in 1985, 6 years after the events of X, this trailer shows our titular Maxine (Mia Goth) trying to make herself a movie star in the seedy underbelly of 1980s Hollywood.  It’s a town where everyone seems to have a secret, and if that’s not enough, there’s a serial killer (the infamous “Night Stalker”) on the loose.

It also shows her visiting a few familiar locations.

As much as X oozed in 1970s vibes, this trailer, complete with the song “Obsession” by Animotion equally oozes in 1980s vibes.  Maxine was able to survive the homicidal Pearl, but does she stand a chance in a town where everyone is ruthless and there’s a serial killer on the loose?  It also looks like in one moment, her past may come back to bite her.

She definitely still looks in the mirror and says the, “I will not accept a life I don’t deserve” mantra.

To say this is a great ensemble cast would be an understatement.  The trailer alone shows off Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon.  Mind you these are just the ones the trailer shows.

The whole thing stems around this concept of the whole world knowing Maxine’s name, which given the subject matter may very easily mean that she will be murdered by the Night Stalker and her name will be forever tied to him.  Given how dark the other two movies where, there’s no telling what Ti West has in store for us this time!
